Professor Joshua Weishart Presents at Launch of Education Rights Institute at UVA School of Law

On Monday, October 16, 2023, West Virginia University College of Law Professor Joshua Weishart participated in conference to launch the Education Rights Institute at the University of Virginia School of Law. The Education Rights Institute is a newly formed center at UVA Law that "aims to expand the opportunity for students in the United States to enjoy a right to a high-quality education that empowers them to be college- and career-ready and engaged citizens."

Professor Weishart served as a panelist in a program titled "Law and Policy Reforms for Educational Opportunity Gaps" with other education law experts and moderated by the ERI's inaugural director Kimberly Jenkins Robinson.

Professor Joshua Weishart Publishes Commentary in Washington Post

West Virginia College of Law professor Joshua Weishart recently published commentary in the Washington Post on teachers' rights. In this article, titled "The basic rights teachers don’t have", Professor Weishart discusses the retraction of teacher rights nationwide over the last decade, including their First Amendment rights as educators and thus, academic freedoms.

Professor Weishart's article is informed by research recently published in the U.C. Davis Law Review: "The Right to Teach."

Professor Weishart Speaks at Inaugural William Hubbard Conference on Law & Education

West Virginia University College of Law professor Joshua Weishart recently spoke as a panelist at the inaugural William Hubbard Conference on Law & Education. The conference was hosted at the University of South Carolina School of Law by the South Caroline Law Review and the American Bar Foundation on February 25, 2022.

Profesor Weishart joined other leading experts in education law on a panel titled "Privatization and the Stability of Public Education". Panelists discussed topics including school choice, public education funding, and the right to education.
