Professor Sean Tu Publishes New Research Letter in JAMA

West Virginia University College of Law professor  S. Sean Tu recently published a new Research Letter in JAMA. The article, titled "Changes in the Number of Continuation Patents on Drugs Approved by the FDA", is the result of a comprehensive study of all drug patents from 2000-2015.  Professor Tu and co-authors examine the frequency of continuation patents on brand-name drugs and how they contribute to the creation of patent thickets. Professor Tu co-authored this new work with Aaron S. Kesselheim, and William B. Feldman of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and with Kathrine Wetherbee of Duke University. It was published online by the journal on August 1, 2023.

Professor Sean Tu Publishes Article in JAMA on Patent Claims before SCOTUS in Amgen v. Sanofi

West Virginia College of Law professor  S. Sean Tu recently published new opinion piece in JAMA. The article, titled  "Broad Patent Claims Come Before the Supreme Court in Amgen v Sanofi," is co-authored by Professor Tu with researchers at Program On Regulation, Therapeutics, And Law (PORTAL) at Harvard Medical School where Professor Tu is a visiting professor.  It was published online by the journal on March 27, 2023.

The article discusses patent claims raised in Amgen v. Sanofi, a case currently before the Supreme Court. Professor Tu previously contributed to an amicus brief filed in the case: Brief of Intellectual Property Law Professors and Scholars as Amici Curiae in Support of the Respondents.

Professor Sean Tu Awarded Research Grant by National Institute for Health Care Management

West Virginia Unviversity College of Law Professor Sean Tu will receive a research grant from the National Institute of Health Care Management in 2023-2024. NIHCM awards grants to those who initiate work that will "advance evidence on a broad range of factors that contribute to rising health care costs and ongoing health care disparities."

Professor Tu's project is called "Improving Competitive Drug Markets by Reviewing Patents." He will be joined on the project by Aaron S. Kesselheim of Harvard University and Victor van de Wiele of the University of Cambridge.

Professor Sean Tu Publishes New Article in JAMA on Intellectual Property Bills in Congress

West Virginia College of Law professor  S. Sean Tu recently published new opinion piece in JAMA. The article, titled  "Recent Patent Reform Bills and Their Implications for Prescription Drugs," is co-authored by Professor Tu with researchers at Program On Regulation, Therapeutics, And Law (PORTAL) at Harvard Medical School where Professor Tu is a visiting professor.  It was published online by the journal on January 13, 2023.

The article discusses three bills expected to be re-introduced in Congress this session with implication for intellectual property law: the Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2022 (S. 4734), the Interagency Patent Coordination and Improvement Act of 2022 (S. 4430), and the Patent Examination and Quality Improvement Act of 2022 (S. 4704)

Professor Caroline Osborne Publishes New Article in SMU Science & Technology Law Review

West Virginia College of Law Professor Caroline Osborne recently published a new article in the SMU Science and Technology Law Review. The article is titled "Copyright, Pandemics, and Emergencies: When Desparate Times Dictate Contextual Responses" and appears in volume 24, issue 2 of the journal.
