Professor Beety featured at Long-Form Scholarship Celebration

West Virginia University College of Law professor Valena Beety is featured in the university's annual Long-Form Scholarship Celebration. In partnership with the WVU Humanities Center and the WVU Press, the Provost's office recognizes the achievements of faculty and staff members who have published a book, released a cd, or produced a full-length work in another medium including art, theater, film, and dance. This year Professor Beety's Book, the Wrongful Convictions Reader, is featured.

The Wrongful Convictions Reader is co-authored by Professor Beety and Russell D. Covey of Georgia State University College of Law. It was published in October 2018.

Professor Oliva Speaks on Public Health and the Opioid Crisis on Panel at Harvard Law

West Virginia University College of Law professor Jennifer Oliva participated in a panel discussion at Harvard Law on April 1, 2019. Professor Oliva was an invited panlist and organizer for the event titled "Public Health Approaches to the Opioid Crisis: Overcoming Obstacles to Community-Driven Solutions" . The panel discussed "community-driven, evidence-based public health strategies aimed at reducing overdose deaths in hard-to-reach populations in Massachusetts, including fishing families, veterans, and individuals who are incarcerated."

Professor Oliva was joined on the panel by Stephen Wood of Harvard Medical School and J.J. Bartlet, President of Fishing Partnership Support Servicers. The panel was moderated by Carmel Shacher, Executive Director of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School.

Professor Martin Appointed to Morgantown Human Rights Commission

West Virginia University law professor Jena Martin has been appointed to the Morgantown Human Rights Commission as the law school liaison. The City Council appoints members to the commission for two-year terms.

Morgantown City Council established a Human Rights Commission in 2001. The purpose of the Human Rights Commission is "to provide leadership for addressing community interaction and fairness concerns. It works to ensure that the City is not only providing services, but maintaining ways in which a community can live together inclusively, functionally, and justly despite differences, complexities, and conflicts."

Professor Valarie Blake Speaks at Creighton Law Review Symposium on Inequities and Injustice in Health Care

West Virginia University law professor Valarie Blake will speak at the Annual Creighton Law Review Symposium today, March 7, 2019 in Omaha, Nebraska. This year's symposium is titled Inequities and Injustice in Health Care. Professor Blake is featured in a panel discussion "Inequities & Discrimination Based on Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, Race, & Disability Status".
